Replacing the belt on a Speed Queen dryer is a job that can be done in about a half hour. Speed Queen dryers are part of the GE line of appliances and share many of the same mechanical features and designs as other GE models. As the belt continues to work while the dryer is in operation, over time it will wear out or break, requiring that it be replaced. You can change the belt yourself without spending the money to call a repairman to fix the appliance.

  1. 1

Unplug the Speed Queen dryer from the electrical socket before attempting to replace the belt.

  2. 2

Open the dryer door and locate the screws underneath the lip of the dryer top, removing the screws with a screwdriver.

  3. 3

Pull the lint filter screen out from under the lint filter cover and unfasten the screws underneath the cover with a screwdriver.

  4. 4

Flip the top lid back on the hinges so it is resting against the wall, and lift up the front panel of the dryer, dislodging it from the clips at the base of the cabinet.

  5. 5

Tip the front panel away from the cabinet and unplug the door switch connector, pulling it away from the prongs by hand and setting the panel out of the way.

  6. 6

Locate the shroud underneath the dryer drum and remove the screws with a screwdriver, setting the shroud out of the way.

  7. 7

Locate the idler arm on the bottom of the cabinet. Move the arm forward to relieve the tension on the belt while removing the belt from the motor and idler arm pulleys as well as the dryer drum.

  8. 8

Place the new belt around the drum and pulleys, letting the idler arm move back into position to apply tension to the belt.

  9. 9

Check the belt to verify that it is seated properly around the drum and pulleys and that there are no twists in the belt.

  10. 10

Reattach the shroud with screws and place the front panel back into position, plugging the door switch connector onto the prong and sliding the front panel into place over the base clips.

  11. 11

Flip the top lid of the dryer back over the cabinet base and secure the top by fastening the screws on the underside of the top in the front with a screwdriver.

  12. 12

Fasten the screws underneath the lint filter cover with a screwdriver and slide the lint filter screen into the filter slot.

  13. 13

Plug the electrical cord of the Speed Queen dryer into the electrical socket.
