Wool carpets are constructed of either 100 per cent wool or a combination of wool and other fibres. Most wool carpets are in the form of an area rug that can range in size from a door mat to a room size rug. Cleaning a 100 per cent wool carpet with care to prevent the wool fibres from piling, which results in tiny balls on top of the carpet. In addition, too much water causes the wool fibres to shrink, which damages the wool carpet.

  1. 1

Vacuum the entire surface of the area rug at least two to three times per week to remove dirt, dust and excess wool fuzz. Vacuum the entire rug lengthwise, and vacuum it across the width to remove all dirt. The vacuum should move easily over the carpet. If there is significant drag on the carpet, raise the carpet level indicator on the vacuum.

  2. 2

Spray a foam carpet cleaner over the entire surface of the wool carpet. Scrub the foam in using a cloth or sponge. Do not use a brush as the bristles will cause piling on top of the carpet.

  3. 3

Remove all traces of the foam from the wool carpet using an absorbent pad or cloth.

  4. 4

Allow the wool carpet to dry completely before walking on it.

Tips and warnings

  • During the first year, there will be a significant amount of fuzz that accumulates on top of the rug, which is normal and does not mean that the carpet is being damaged.
  • You can also steam clean wool rugs as long as you use a minimal amount of water.
  • Easily remove stains on wool carpets with most carpet cleaning solutions.
  • Do not use any type of oxygenated cleaner on wool carpets.
