How to Attach Sequins to Fabric
Attach sequins to fabric by hand sewing them. (sequins image by Vaida from Fotolia.com)

Embellishing fabric is an effective way to add colour, interest and variety to plain fabric. Sequins are ideal as a fabric embellishment because they create shimmering effects that catch the eye as the fabric moves with you. Attach sequins to fabric by stitching each sequin on individually. Although the process may be tedious, the finished effect promises to be worth every minute you spend.

Instructions

  1. 1

Thread the needle with an 18-inch-long length of thread. Double the thread on the needle and tie the ends of the thread into a small overhand knot.

  2. 2

Insert the needle through the fabric on the right side of the fabric at the point where you wish to attach your first sequin. Take a 1/8-inch-long stitch in the fabric and pull the thread through until approximately 1 inch of thread remains before the knot on the end of the thread.

  3. 3

Pass the needle through the small loop of thread between the stitch and the knot on the end of the thread to create a tiny knot at the stitch. Pull the thread tight to finish the knot.

  4. 4

Insert the needle through the centre hole of the sequin and pass the sequin down along the thread until it sits on the fabric above the tiny knot.

  5. 5

Insert the needle on the outside edge of the sequin and back down through the fabric. Insert the needle back up through the centre hole of the sequin and then insert the needle back down again on another outside edge of the sequin and back down through the fabric. Bring the needle back up through the centre hole of the sequin one more time and take one more stitch over the sequin to the outer edge and insert the needle back down again through the fabric. You have just secured the sequin to the fabric with three stitches.

  6. 6

Knot the thread on the underside of the fabric and clip the excess thread on the other side of the knot. This attaches one sequin to the fabric.

  7. 7

Repeat Steps two through six to attach as many different sequins to your fabric as you desire.

Tips and warnings

  • Overlap the sequins slightly to create a shimmery effect. Choose contrasting thread that will add a complementary colour over the sequins for a special effect.
