Yahoo! Messenger is a program that allows Yahoo! users the freedom of private chat, including photo and video sharing. Each user has a unique ID name. You can't change your username, unless you create an entirely new account with Yahoo!. However, there are ways to change what name you publicly display, as well as the option of creating alias names.

Change how your name is displayed. Your display name will be the name that shows up on other Yahoo! Messenger user's friend lists. Sign into Yahoo! Messenger and click "Yahoo! Messenger" on the menu and select "My Account Info." In the new window, click "Edit" located in the contact information area. Choose a name and enter it into the name field. Click "Finished." Sign out of Yahoo! Messenger. Your change appears on the next sign in.
Add an alias name to your account. An alias is a name you use in place of your Yahoo ID for applications, such as Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! Message Boards and Yahoo! Games. For example, you can use the alias name "GamerGirl" when you play Yahoo! Games, instead of your user ID. Click "Account Information" from the Yahoo! Messenger menu and enter your password. Click "Account Settings" and "Manage your Yahoo! Aliases." Click "Add an Alias." In the text box, enter your alias and click "Save." Each alias name has its own profile, just like your user ID.
Use your alias name. After signing in, click "Edit" and "My Profiles" from the menu. Click a name to put an "X" by it. Adding an "X" will make that alias name appear online. To send a message with an alias name, double-click the username in your friends list and select your alias name from the drop-down box in the upper right corner of the messaging window. Proceed with sending your message.
