The Portable Document Format (PDF) is regarded as the standard for printing and sending documents electronically. As a PDF, the document retains all formatting. The PDF is often used as the format for electronic books and reports. While there are different programs that work with PDFs, Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader have a number of features that allow you to customise and print specific types of documents. If you don't have the full version of Adobe Acrobat on your computer, download and install the free Adobe Reader software (see Resources). Printing out a book can be done in a few ways, depending on your needs. You can simply print out a multipage document and bind it, or set up the document for a folded booklet, in which the pages are arranged and printed in the correct order.

Instructions

    Regular Printing

  1. 1

Open the PDF book in Adobe Reader or Acrobat.

  2. 2

Connect your printer to the computer. Make sure the printer is configured and recognised by the computer.

  3. 3

Click the "File" menu. Select "Print Setup." Select the printer you'll be using, paper size and page orientation for the PDF. Click "OK."

  4. 4

Click "File, Print." In the dialogue box, make sure the correct printer is selected. Select the print range you want. Keep "All" selected to print the entire PDF, or enter a number of pages you want to print. Click "Subset" to print only even or odd pages.

  5. 5

Select how many copies you want under "Page Handling." Under "Page Scaling," choose how you want the pages to appear. For normal printing, choose "Fit to Printable Area" or "None."

  6. 6

Put some paper into the printer, making sure there's enough to cover the number of sheets you'll need.

  7. 7

Click "Print" when you're satisfied with the printing options you've chosen.

    Booklet Printing (Ref. 4)

  1. 1

Click "File, Print." Select your printer under the "Name" field."

  2. 2

Click the "Page Scaling" menu, and select "Booklet Printing."

  3. 3

Select "All" in the "Print Range" group to print the entire book. If you only want to print a portion, click "Pages" and enter the range.

  4. 4

Click the "Booklet Subset" menu. This will determine how the pages are printed. Choose "Both Sides" to print on both sides of each page. For this to work, your printer must be able to do automatic duplex printing. If not, choose "Front Side Only." With this option, all the front side pages will print first. You will flip the pages over after they print, click "File, Print" again and choose "Back Side Only."

  5. 5

Click "Auto-Rotate Pages" to allow Adobe to automatically rotate the page for the best fit. Click the "Binding" menu. Select "Left" for basic left-to-right reading. Click "Left (Tall)" to instead fold the pages vertically. Click "Print."
