Whether you are posting pictures of your products on eBay, e-mailing pictures to friends and family or for a host of other reasons, you might need to reduce the file size of your photo. Windows Photo Gallery is a feature in Windows that allows you to view, organise, edit, share and print your photos, and to some extent videos. Using the Gallery, reducing the photo size in Windows is a relatively easy process and can be done the moment you upload your digital pictures.

    Compress or Resize Photos in Microsoft Office Pictures Manager

    Start your computer and click on the "Start Menu" button. Then click on "All Programs" and then "Windows Photo Gallery."

    Double-click on the photo that you want to reduce.

    Click the "Open" button along the toolbar and then "Microsoft Office Picture Manager." This will open the image in a new window.

    Click on the "Edit Pictures" button. When the "Edit Pictures" panel pops up, scroll down to "Change picture size." Here you can elect to resize or compress your picture.

    Select "Compress Pictures." Under "Compress for," select the desired size for reduction, such as for "Documents," "Web pages" or "e-mail messages." You can view the original size and the estimated compressed size prior to accepting any changes. Choose the option that suits your resizing needs, and select "Apply." If none of the options are what you need, click the back arrow at the top of the "Compress Pictures" frame to get back to the "Edit Pictures" frame. Select the "Resize" option and select a predetermined size or import your own size specifications.

    Click "Apply" once you are satisfied with your changes. Then click "File" and "Save" to save your new image.

    Start your computer and click on the "Start Menu" button. Then click on "All Programs" and then "Windows Photo Gallery."

    Double-click on the photo that you want to reduce.

    Click on the "Fix" button along the toolbar. This will bring up the "Fix" pane, which includes a number of options for editing your pictures, such as "Auto Adjust," "Adjust Exposure," "Adjust Color," "Crop Picture" and "Fix Red Eye."

    Click on "Crop Picture," to begin reducing your photo size. A frame will pop up in the centre of the image. Click on the drop-down box under "Proportion" and select your preferred frame size, such as 16 by 9, or 5 by 7, if you desire a photo that will fit in a standard picture frame. Then click "Apply." You can also simply adjust the frame size yourself, by dragging the edges to shrink or expand the frame, to match your resizing specifications. Once you make an edit, the changes are saved automatically.

    Undo your edits by holding "Control" and hitting "Z." You can also undo by selecting the "Undo" button found along the bottom of the "Fix" pane. If, after resizing, you return to the Windows Photo Gallery and decide that you want to undo your changes, simply click on the image. Once it opens, click on "File" and then select "Revert to Original."
