The best aspect of creating a court jester costume is that any minor mistakes made during the process may actually enhance the finished costume by giving the jester a foolish or silly appearance. Use the child's two favourite colours to form the base of the costume and don't worry if your stitches aren't perfect. Depending on the age of the child, he may be able to help create his own jester hat.

Things you need
- 2 pairs sweat pants
- 2 sweat shirts
- Craft foam
- Jingle bells
Gather two pairs of sweat pants and two sweat shirts in contrasting colours that are slightly big on the child.
Carefully cut both pairs of sweat pants apart by cutting straight up through the centre of the crotch area and through the waistband. Match one sweat pant leg to an opposite leg from the contrasting pair of sweat pants and hand sew them together using a whip stitch.
Cut both sweatshirts in half vertically and sew two contrasting pieces together in the same manner.
Cut a piece of felt approximately three to four inches wide and long enough to wrap around the child's head with at least one inch of overlap.
Cut triangles approximately six inches tall out of colourful craft foam and hot glue them along the back of the felt band. The exact shape and size of the triangle is not important but try to make them small enough to fit at least six triangles along the length of the felt band.
Hot glue jingle bells to the end of each triangle. The bells will add a noise element to the costume and weigh down the craft foam triangles so they bend and create the appearance of a jester's hat.
Secure the ends of the felt band around the child's head with two safety pins to complete the jester costume.
