There's nothing more annoying than coming home after a hard day's work and being greeted by a constant barrage of phone calls from companies offering you things you never signed up for. It seems you can never get a word in or even the phrase, "I'm not interested" without talking over the telemarketer. Even so, they just try calling you another day to offer the same product again. The good news is that there are ways to stop this annoyance for good.
- Skill level:
- Moderately Easy
Ask them to stop calling. Generally, this will be enough to have that particular company stop calling your home. While you have a telemarketer on the line, ask her to remove your phone number from the company's calling list. If possible, ask for a supervisor to do this. You will have to repeat this action for every telemarketing company.
Make your phone number unlisted. When you set up your phone service, ask the operator to make your phone number unlisted. Sometimes telemarketers obtain your information by generating lists from the White Pages. If your number is not listed, it will not appear in the phone directory.
Read the terms carefully before signing up for a product or service. When you sign up to certain products or services, there may be a term that informs you of a company's intent to share your information with a third party. Oftentimes, if you don't agree to this term you will not be able to obtain that particular product or service. Other companies allow you the option to opt out of this by ticking or unticking a box. Make sure you read this carefully, or you will be contacted by third-party telemarketers.
Block unknown phone numbers. Many telemarketers do not have listed phone numbers. When they call, the number usually comes up as "unavailable" or "unknown." You can ask your telephone company to block these numbers from being able to call your home.
Go online and block the telemarketer's phone number. There are websites that are used to block telemarketers from calling your house. Before using the site, you must have ready your telephone number and the phone number that's been calling you. Type these numbers in the blanks provided and follow the on-screen prompts to block the number. You can find two such sites in the Resources section.
Write a letter to the company. If you find that a specific telemarketing company continues to call you, ask to speak to a supervisor. When the supervisor comes on, ask for the address to the company. Write a letter to the company using certified mail, asking them to stop calling your home. Also mention the fact that you the asked several times over the phone for your number to be taken off of their list.
Tips and warnings
- If you try these tactics and telemarketers continue to call your home, contact your phone company and report the harassment. Your phone company may be able to block the number individually or may ask you to file a police report for harassment. Once the authorities are involved, they would advise you what to do next.
