Making and using your own soap has a number of advantages over using store-bought and mass-produced soaps. The soaps you buy typically have the glycerine removed, which makes it more drying and harsh on your skin. You might also have an allergic reaction to the chemicals used in the soap or breakout because of the chemicals. Making cupcake shaped soap is a cute alternative to traditional homemade soap and because of the different colours of soaps, it's easy to make your own.

Instructions

  1. 1

Grate the Ivory soap into slivers using a cheese grater. It typically takes at least two bars of standard size soap to make the cupcakes and another bar for the icing. You may also want to look for a different coloured soap to use as the icing and create more contrast.

  2. 2

Mix the grated soap and a few tablespoons of water in a glass bowl, using just enough water to cover the soap slivers. Cook in the microwave for one minute, remove and stir. Then cook for another minute and mix again. Add a few drops of glycerine and honey and mix well. The ingredients make the mixture smoother.

  3. 3

Spray the inside of a cupcake or muffin tin with the spray oil. Distribute the soap mixture evenly among the cups in the tin and store in a cool place overnight or in the freezer for several hours. Push the soaps out when finished and prepare the icing mixture.

  4. 4

Slice another bar of Ivory soap or a soap in a different colour with your cheese grater. Mix in one tablespoon glycerine and enough water to cover the soap. Microwave on high for one minute, mix again and repeat. Add a few granules of sugar on top of the soaps if you want an abrasive type of soap.

  5. 5

Pour the liquid soap mixture into a piping bag with a large tip. Pipe the soap mixture onto the top of each soap cupcake to resemble frosting. If you can't find a piping bag, use a plastic bag with a hole cut in the bottom or just spoon the mixture on top. Dust the top of each soap with cocoa powder or cinnamon if you want and let dry.

Tips and warnings

  • Don't bake with the muffin tins once you use them for cupcake soaps.
