How to Configure a USB Port to a Serial Comm Port

In order to configure a USB port to a serial comm port, you need a USB to serial adaptor. A serial or comm port is used to connect into various devices such as routers and switches. The serial port is also known as a RS232 connector. If your computer does not have a comm port, as is often the case with laptops, you need to configure the USB port using the USB adaptor.

Instructions

    Insert the installation CD into the CD-ROM drive of the computer.

    Plug the USB to serial adaptor into an open USB port on the computer. A hardware installation wizard will pop up.

  3. 3

    Click "Next" to start the installation and then again to let Windows search for drivers. Make sure to include the CD-ROM drive as part of the search. Windows will install the driver.

    Click "Finish" to complete the installation.
