Setting up your e-mail account with Hotmail on the iPhone is possible, although Microsoft only allows access to Hotmail e-mail accounts through POP3 (or Post Office Protocol 3) instead of the more advanced IMAP (or Interactive Mail Access Protocol).
Accessing your Hotmail e-mail account through POP3 will allow you to view and read e-mail messages, although they will not be marked as read within the Hotmail e-mail account itself online.
