The "F" keys, or functions keys, on a Dell Laptop D430 operate default functions that are defined by Windows. However, the keys on the D430 are similar to many laptops in that many of the keys have secondary functions that can be enabled by pressing the "Fn" key along with the "F" key.

Press F1 to open "Help" in most Windows programs.
Press F2 to rename a selected file or icon.
Press F3 to open the "Find" feature in many Windows programs. This also opens "Search" in Windows.
Press F4 to open the "Find" feature in many Windows programs. For many programs, F3 and F4 do the same thing, though in Windows, F3 opens the search feature, but F4 does not. Pressing F4 in Internet Explorer also brings down the address bar to show the different websites you have been to.
Press F5 to refresh a Web page in most Internet browsers and in the selected windows in Windows operating system.
Press F6 to move the cursor to the address bar in many Internet browsers and in Windows.
Press F7 to run spell check in many Windows programs.
Press F8 during start-up to enter the Windows start-up menu. This lets you choose what mode you want to start Windows in.
Press F10 to activate the top menu in many Windows programs. This is similar to pressing the Alt key. There is no general function for F9.
Press F11 to expand the selected window or program to fill the screen.
Press F12 to open the "Save As..." box in some Windows programs.
Press Fn and F1 together to make the D430 go into hibernate mode.
Press Fn and F3 to open the "Dell Quickset Battery Meter" program.
Press Fn and F10 to eject the optical drive.
Press Fn and F7 to toggle between widescreen and standard-screen resolutions.
Pres Fn and F8 to allow video to be displayed on a second monitor if it is connected to the laptop via the connector on the back of the D430.
Tips and warnings
- To ensure that all the secondary functions work, be sure to install any Dell drivers and software included with your D430. The primary functions for the F keys can be superseded by different programs and will not work the same way with every program.
