Give that special occasion a country touch by decorating with mini straw bales. Adorable additions to table centrepieces, round mini straw bales can be affordably and easily made on your own using hay or straw and wire. Hay or straw can be purchased at most farm and feed stores. These bales are fast to make, and a large quantity can be produced in a short amount of time. These instructions make 6-inch long bales, but can easily be adjusted for making smaller or larger sizes.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Hay or straw
- 6-by-11 inch paper
- Thin, black craft wire
- Wire cutters
Cut a piece of paper 6 inches wide and 11 inches long. This will be used for forming the bales.
Grab a clump of straw in your hand so you have a bunch that is about 3 inches thick.
Place the clump on the paper at one of the short ends.
Arrange the straw so the stalks are more or less going in the same direction.
Roll the clump tightly in the paper. This is like rolling up a sleeping bag.
Use scissors to trim off any straw ends that are sticking out beyond the edges of the paper to create flat, even bale ends.
Unroll the paper and firmly grab hold of the bail so as to retain the form.
Secure the bale by wrapping it with two lengths of thin, black wire. You will need approximately 12-inch lengths of wire. Connect the wire ends by tightly twisting them together with pliers. Snip any extra wire off with wire cutters.
