How to charge a laptop battery without the computer

Updated February 21, 2017

No matter what type of laptop you own, it is a good idea to have a spare battery or two on hand. Having a spare battery doubles the length of time you can work without plugging in and that can be a real benefit when you are on the road. By using an external battery charger, laptop owners can charge these batteries without the computer.

Remove the battery from your laptop or use a spare battery if you have one.

Plug your external charger or universal battery charger into an electrical socket. Insert your laptop battery into the charging station and watch for the charging light to illuminate.

Watch the lights on the charger to determine when the charging cycle is complete. Most chargers have indicator lights that flash when the battery is charging, then stay on steady when the charging cycle is complete.
