A three-tiered water feature in your yard or a reflecting pool gives visual interest to your landscape and creates a relaxing sound. Fountains installed in a pond operate by a pump in the water it sits in. Install a prefabricated fountain or assemble your own customised water feature. Three-tiered foundtains are available in many designs, formats and orientations. Whether freestanding, wall-mounted or added to a deck or patio, a three-tiered fountain is an appealing addition to your landscape.

Pedestal in Pool

Purchase a pedestal fountain with three tiers and install it in the middle of a walled garden in your yard. There are a variety of commercially available styles of fountains to choose from, such as the cherub, lion, water nymph and other sculptural elements. A simple, terracotta fountain set in a gravel-based pool is an appropriate addition to a Spanish courtyard. A three-tiered, concrete, scalloped fountain lends a touch of the Victorian era to your landscape.

Rain Chain

A hammered copper fountain with three separate cups for water to catch and spill from a stone column makes the sound of rain in your backyard. This fountain can use rain on wet days or water from a basin below that is pumped up the stone column to flow again and create music near your patio or deck. For an Asian landscape addition, exchange the hammered copper for bamboo tubing. The sound will be subtler, but the organic look of the bamboo will blend into your garden backdrop.

Install a wall-mounted, spitting fountain on a house wall or freestanding wall in your yard. The catch basin below the fountains should be well situated and large enough to catch all of the water before a pump recycles it back to the spigots. The height of the spigots related to the pool will change the sound of the water, making it loud or soft. Fun options for spigots are lions' heads, leaf-framed faces or fish heads. A Mediterranean garden is the perfect venue for a sun-face, terracotta spigot. A different style of three-tiered, wall-mounted fountain would be made of three simple ledges that catch the water and spill from one to the other into the pool below.

For the ecologically-minded homeowner, a solar-powered fountain is an environmentally-friendly option and it saves money. The fountain's solar panels do not store energy so on cloudy days and at night, the fountain operates more slowly or not at all. Your three-tiered solar fountain should be placed in a pond with an expanse of direct sunlight. Purchase a small, contained, three-tiered fountain for a patio table or outdoor bar. Small tiered fountains should be brought in on rainy days and in the winter. Those with AC adaptors can be plugged into your house current if you have exterior electrical sockets.
