  1. 1

Cut a piece of vinyl large enough for your design. Cut several pieces of vinyl for designs that are too large to fit on a single piece.

  2. 2

Use masking tape to secure your vinyl to your cutting mat. Then, secure your design over the vinyl with more masking tape. Do this with one piece of vinyl and one part of your design at a time if you are cutting your design from several pieces of vinyl.

  3. 3

Cut your design from your vinyl by tracing it with a craft knife. You can use a ruler to guide your craft knife for the straight lines in your design if you don't feel comfortable making the straight cuts freehand.

  4. 4

Remove the design from the top of the vinyl once you are finished cutting it out. Remove the cut-out design from the rest of the vinyl sheet.

  5. 5

Peel the paper backing from your vinyl design and stick it to the desired surface.

Tips and warnings

  • Vinyl transfer tape can be used to help place a vinyl decal if you are worried about keeping different pieces of the design in certain positions.
  • Certain craft machines, such as the Cricut, can be used to cut vinyl decals.
