Sony VAIO computers come standard with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 as the primary operating system. One of the features included in each of these versions is the ability to work with and switch between multiple computer monitors. Switching monitors on your Sony VAIO is easy to do once you've connected a second monitor to the unit. This works on VAIO notebooks as well as desktops.

Click the Start button on the Desktop taskbar. Open the Control Panel.
Click Appearance and Personalization if using Windows Vista or 7. If using Windows XP, click Appearance and Themes.
Click Display to open the Display menu.
Click Change display settings if using Windows Vista or 7. If using Windows XP, choose the Settings tab in the Display menu.
Click the "Identify" button to determine which monitor you are currently using (a large number appears briefly on your screen). To switch monitors, click the other monitor icon. If using Windows Vista or 7, click the Multiple Displays drop-down box and choose to show the desktop on the selected monitor. If using Windows XP, click the box next to Use this device as the primary monitor. Then click "Apply" and "OK" to save the changes.
Tips and warnings
- Windows 7 offers a shortcut key to switch between monitors on the fly. Press the Windows Key+P to open a quick switch menu. This works on all VAIO computers running Windows 7.
