Many times when homes are built or when you are moving into an apartment, the phone jack seems to never be in the right area of the room, based on your furniture set-up. A quick and easy fix is to install a phone extension line, connected to the existing phone jack. This will give you the freedom to locate your phone where it best fits your needs.

Things you need
- Wire cutters/stripper
- RF-11 modular surface mount box
- 4-conductor phone cable
Pull all the furniture away from the wall to give you free access to the baseboards to run the wiring. Unscrew the existing modular phone box (usually located on the baseboard) to expose the screw terminals inside. If the box has a cover over it, pop it off using a screwdriver.
Strip about 1 1/2-inch of the outer cover insulation from the end of a 4-conduction phone cable. This will expose 4 wires coloured red, green, black and yellow. Strip 1/2-inch of insulation off of each wire. Connect each wire in the cable to the screw terminals on the box by bending the bare wire into a "U" shape to wrap around each screw. Match the colours (red to red, green to green, and so on). Each screw will already have a wire wrapped around it, so when you are done, each screw will have two wires wrapped around it (with the wires matching their coloured insulation).
Using a hammer, gently tap the nails in the wire clamps to hold the phone line cable securely to the baseboard as it travels around the room. The nails and clamps are included in the package of clamps.
Cut the end of the phone cable to the desired length. Strip about 1 1/2-inch of the outer cover insulation from the end of the cable. Strip 1/2-inch of insulation off of each of the four exposed wires.
Connect each wire in the cable to screw terminals to the new surface mount box, matching the colours (red to red, green to green, and so on). If the box has a cover on it, pop the cover off using a screwdriver. Screw the box to the baseboard using the screws that come with it. Push the cover back on. The box has a modular phone jack built in.
Plug the phone into the modular jack on the box and test for dial tone.
