How do I cook pizza in a microwave oven?

Updated February 21, 2017

Making your own pizza in a microwave oven might not seem very easy; the size of the microwave oven is much too small to hold a traditional-sized pizza, and you can't cook raw pizza dough simply by microwaving it. If you use an alternative bread product in place of pizza dough, however, you can make simple, delicious, homemade mini-pizzas with any toppings you like, hot and fresh from the microwave oven.

Mix the tomato sauce with the tomato paste in a small bowl. Depending on which brands of tomato sauce and paste you are using, you may need to add a tiny bit of water to the mix. The consistency should closely resemble that of well-stirred sour cream.

Add 5 ml (1 tsp) of sugar at a time, tasting after each mixing to check the acidity of the tomato sauce. The sauce shouldn't be especially sweet but should have a rich tomato flavour that isn't overcome with the acidity.

Throw in a large pinch of salt, pepper, and garlic powder to the sauce. Add 7 ml (1/2 tbsp) of oregano. Stir well, and add additional spices to taste.

Place something to act as the pizza dough, such as a halved bagel or slice of french bread on a microwave-safe plate. Use a spoon to spread the tomato sauce evenly over the bread. Freeze extra sauce and save for later use.

Scatter a generous amount of a shredded Italian cheese blend over the sauced pieces of bread. If you are grating your own cheese, mix some mozzarella and Parmesan to create the blend yourself.

Cut packaged pepperoni pieces into quarters and sprinkle over the cheese. Add any more toppings that you might enjoy, such as sliced green peppers, diced olives or pre-cooked Italian sausage.

Cook the pizzas in the microwave oven for two minutes or until the cheese is completely melted and bubbly. Let them stand for a minute or so to allow the pizzas to cool off before eating.
