Light source (light on image by timur1970 from Fotolia.com)

A candela is the unit of measure for light produced from a given source, used to measure the output of high intensity LEDs. A lumen is the amount of light striking a given surface, commonly used when measuring the intensity of incandescent lights. While these are two different measurements, there is an approximate conversion between the two units.
