Portable Network Graphics (PNG) images are implemented in place of GIF files. A PNG graphic is a high-quality graphic image, but it does not take up as much Web host hard drive space as other images such as JPG or BMP. Smaller image files are used on websites to avoid high download times for users who have slower Internet connections. To change the file extension, use software such as Microsoft Paint to convert the image to a new format and change the extension.

Right-click the PNG file and select "Open With." In the list of programs, select "Microsoft Paint." This loads the file in the Paint software.
Click the "File" menu item and then select "Save As." A new window opens where you can convert and change the file extension for the file.
Select "JPG" from the drop-down box labelled "Save as type." In the text box labelled "File name," enter a new name for the converted file. You do not need to specify a file extension, since the application will change the extension automatically.
Click the "Save" button. This saves the file to your hard drive with the file extension converted to ".jpg."
