The front rotors on your Suzuki XL7 are a key part of the braking system and should be either turned or replaced with every brake job. Turning the brakes resurfaces them by grinding off the high spots on the rotor, making it flat again. Before you turn or replace the rotors, however, first you must take the old ones off, which will take about 30 minutes to do for both sides of the SUV.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Jack stands
- Tire iron
- Metal wire
- 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
- Two 8mm bolts
Use the jack to lift up the front of the vehicle, then set it on the jack stands. Be sure that the vehicle is completely and solidly on the stands prior to working on the vehicle. Take off the front wheels using the tire iron and set them out of the workspace.
Take the brake caliper off the brake-caliper bracket by loosening the caliper carrier bolts with the ratchet, then hang the caliper from the front suspension using the metal wire to keep the brake hose from bending.
Thread the two 8mm bolts into the small holes on the face of the rotor between the lugs with your hands until they stop. Then tighten them down the rest of the way, alternating between the two, using the ratchet. This will push the rotor off the hub. Then pull the rotor off the front wheel hub.
