One of the staples of online gaming is communication between teammates. While teammates used to strategise and bragged about kills through instant messaging and other text-based communication, these days headsets are king, offering real-time verbal conversation. This allows gamers to focus on the action and receive immediate information from teammates. If the headsets work. If you open a new Xbox 360 headset, find nothing missing and can't get it to work, the likely culprit is the plug port on the controller.

Things you need
- Cotton swabs
- Rubbing alcohol
Turn on the Xbox 360.
Plug your headset into the controller.
Unplug your controller from the console.
Plug the controller back in. This method may work for you because the circuits contained in the controller are reset when it is plugged back into the console. If you have a wireless controller, just remove and replace the battery pack to achieve the same effect.
Resetting the Circuits
Unplug the controller from the console.
Pull the cotton from the tip of a cotton swab. Do not remove the cotton; just pull it so you have a long, thin strand protruding from the tip.
Dampen the cotton strand with rubbing alcohol.
Insert the cotton into the headset plug port and twist the swab. This rids the inside of the port of foreign contaminants, which can be forced into the port during repeated removal and replacement. If your teammates complain about a high-pitched squealing coming from your headset, dirt is usually the culprit.
Allow the alcohol in the port to dry before plugging your headset back in.
Cleaning the Port
Log on to Xbox Live.

Click "Send Message," then click "Voice Message."
Press the record button, which looks like a circle. Speak for approximately 10 seconds, then press the stop button, which looks like a square.
Press the play button, which looks like a triangle. You should hear your recording. If you do not, you may need to purchase a new headset. Simply back out of the recording tab to delete the message.

Tips and warnings
- Be sure not to saturate the cotton with rubbing alcohol because the excess alcohol may work into your controller. This may lead to electrical shorting when the controller is plugged back in.
