A circus theme party is appropriate for children in a wide age group. Young and older guests will enjoy the circus decor that enhances the party. In addition to circus decorations, bring the theme to life by hiring a clown, balloon artist or magician to entertain guests. Serve peanuts, popcorn and candyfloss for a true circus feel.

The Big Top

Create a big top inside your home for an indoor circus party. Attach fabric to the ceiling with pushpins to create the feeling of being inside a tent. Drape the pieces down to the wall from the ceiling and attach the bottom of the fabric to the wall to create the sloped ceiling of a circus tent. Use red and white fabric in an alternating pattern to make the circus tent. Add streamers in red and white to the tent ceiling for a festive appearance.

Clowns and Animals

Draw or trace pictures of animals on poster board to decorate the circus room. Paint the pictures and hang the decorations around the room. Accent the room with clown pictures. If you don't have the artistic talent to draw pictures, use inexpensive posters of animals and clowns. Enlarge the pictures for the circus room. For a child's party, place stuffed animals throughout the party venue. Put bears, lions and monkeys in a line for a parade or perch the stuffed animals on stools to create a scene from a big top show.

To decorate the room with balloons, choose all the colours of the rainbow for a circus atmosphere. Balloons can enhance the food table or an archway for guests to pass through as they enter the circus. Rent a helium tank to fill balloons and allow them to drift up to the ceiling. Attach red and white ribbons to the balloons to coordinate with a circus tent.

Transform string and paper towel rolls or rolled construction paper into small trapeze decorations for the party. Cover the paper towel roll with white paper and colour it with paint or markers. Run string through the paper towel roll and hang it up in the room. Attach action figures to the trapeze decorations to represent trapeze artists. Set up a trapeze tableau or scatter trapezes around the room.
