If you want your bed to sit close to the ground, try building your own platform out of wood. This lets you choose the exact height of your bed, along with the colour. If you prefer a natural look, you can use a clear waterproof sealant that allows the wood grain to show through instead of covering it with paint. Building your own bed platform will also save you money over purchasing a prefabricated one from a furniture store.

Things you need
- Tape measure
- Electric saw
- Lumber (2x4, 2x6, 2x8 or 2x12)
- Wood glue
- Wood screws
- Paint, wood stain, or polyurethane sealer
Decide how high you want the bed to sit off the ground. Purchase the appropriate size of lumber for your desired bed height. For example, if you want a bed that is four inches off the ground, use 2-by-4 lumber to build the platform. If you want a 12-inch high bed, use 2-by-12 lumber instead.
Measure the mattress that will be placed on top of the wooden bed frame. Subtract one or two inches from each side's measurement so the mattress will hang over the edge of the frame. This will keep you from banging your legs on the frame when you get in and out of the bed.
Cut two side pieces of lumber and two end pieces with an electric saw, following the measurements you made in Step Two. Set the four cut pieces of wood on the floor in the shape of a box. Connect the corner joints with wood glue. Use clamps to keep the ends of the wood together until the wood dries. Leave the glue to dry overnight, then take off the clamps. Insert three large wood screws through each corner to reinforce the joint.
Cut a piece of wood the same length as the end pieces of your box. Set this piece into the box so that it sits in the centre for support. You may need to use extra support pieces for large mattresses. If this is the case, space out the support pieces evenly inside the box.
Measure and cut a piece of one-half-inch thick plywood so that it covers the box-shaped frame you have just built. You may have to use two panels of plywood to cover the frame for a large mattress. If you are using unfinished plywood, sand the top so you do not get splinters in your mattress. Attach the plywood to the frame with wood screws.
Cover the entire bed platform and frame with the finish of your choice. This can be paint, wood stain, or simply a clear polyurethane sealant that allows the natural wood grain to show through.
