BlackBerrys, like other smartphones, typically hold a lot of user data, including photos, calendar information, word processing documents and a comprehensive address book. To make updating your address book information more convenient, your BlackBerry device can synchronise an address book with a desktop organisation program or webmail program. One advantage of this type of synchronisation is that you can change the contents of a contact entry directly from your personal computer and have it show up on your BlackBerry device.

  3. 3

Use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, which is a free program that comes on an installation disc with your BlackBerry device or get it through a download from the BlackBerry website, to synchronise your contacts on your BlackBerry with your desktop e-mail program. Connect your BlackBerry device to your personal computer using a USB cable, then open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager on your PC. Click "Synchronize" on the BlackBerry Desktop Manager main screen. Follow the screen prompts to perform the synchronisation process.

Follow the screen prompts until the synchronisation process is complete. Note: You might have to download the synchronisation application to your phone.

Tips and warnings

  • You don't have to synchronise your address book immediately after editing a contact entry. Most synchronisation programs automatically update at timed intervals that you set up when you configure your synchronisation program. These timed intervals can vary depending on which program you use and which settings you prefer. If you don't want to synchronise your handset right away, you can just wait for the normal synchronisation to take place and the contact entry will be updated at that time.
  • If you are using BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) instead of BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS), you should contact your BES administrator for information on editing your address book from your computer. Procedure can vary according to the firewall and other security measures that your company is using to protect its computer systems.
