How to Charge a 12 Volt or 24 Volt Battery

Batteries vary in size and shape, and they can produce different power levels for different periods of time, depending on how much power we attempt to pull from them at one time. Car batteries and other deep cycle batteries are common types of rechargeable batteries. By applying a slightly higher voltage and low amperage current to a car battery or other deep cycle battery, it is possible to recharge it.

Instructions

    Unhook the battery cables using your socket wrench and remove the battery.

    Place the battery in a dry, well ventilated space such as in your yard. Batteries emit dangerous gasses during the charging process.

    Check if the battery is a 12 volt or 24 volt battery. Select the voltage setting on your battery charger to match the voltage of your battery. Some chargers have two current settings such as 2 amp or 10 amp. The 2 amp setting is best for overnight charging and the 10 amp setting is best for quick one to two hour charges. A quick charge does not last as long as a slow overnight charge.

    Connect the positive (red) cable of the battery charger to the positive post on the battery. Connect the negative (black) cable to the negative post of the battery.

    Plug in the battery charger and turn it on. Some battery chargers do not have on and off switches. Those types come on once the unit is plugged in.

    Allow the battery to charge overnight with a 2 amp charger setting and approximately one to two hours for a 10 amp charging rate.

    Unplug the charger, remove the charger cables and reinstall the battery.

Tips and warnings

  • The gasses emitted during the charging process are dangerous and can be explosive.
