Trench coats are timeless pieces of outerwear that are not only stylish and elegant but also very warm. Trench coats are worn all over the world and come in a variety of colours and patterns. Nonetheless, trench coats do have some common characteristics that define them. They have double buttons, a lapel and a belt. These trendy jackets can be made quite cost effectively in the comfort of your own home.
Select the fabric you will use for the coat. This will include the exterior and the lining. Choose a style for your coat. Buy a pattern for the style that you prefer.
Place the pattern on the fabric and secure it with straight pins. Position the pattern to minimise the amount of space between the pattern pieces. This will give you extra material if you make a mistake.
Cut along the lines of the pattern with scissors. Leave approximately .5-inches of space on either side of the line for seam allowance.
Connect the pieces of fabric together using straight pins. Sew the pieces together with a straight stitch on your sewing machine. Follow the order specified by the pattern instructions.
Make the lining as a separate coat. Sew the outer coat and the lining together along the major seam lines.
Attach the buttons and belt loops. Sew the buttons and button loops onto the coat. Place the belt around the coat and try it on.
