If you have a RAZR2 V8 and want to keep it when you change carriers, you will need to unlock it. To do that, you need an unlock code specific to your phone's unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. Once your phone is unlocked, you can insert your subscriber identity module (SIM) card from your new carrier and your phone will be up and running. When you know how to unlock your phone, you're free to switch to a carrier with better coverage or lower rates.

Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Try the pay sites Cell Unlock, Motorola Unlock Now or Cell Unlock Store for a code to unlock your phone. Enter your IMEI number, which you'd get from inside the battery compartment of your phone. Pay, and wait for the code to be sent to you by e-mail. Enter it exactly as it appears in the email.

  2. 2

Try the Motorola site for a USB driver if you don't feel comfortable giving your IMEI number to someone else. (See Resources.) Download the driver appropriate for your computer. Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable. Click on PK2 Commander in your phone settings. Click on "Motorola Installation Driver" on your phone to install the Accessories Interface. The phone will automatically power off and on. When it comes back on, it will be unlocked.

  3. 3

Call customer service to see if they'll give you the unlock code for free. Claim that you need to unlock the phone to travel overseas. Be very polite. They can respond to impatience and rudeness by just saying "no" and making notes of your behaviour for the next rep you call to see. Not every rep knows what to do, so be patient if the current one says nothing can be done. The nicer you are, the better the notes in your file will appear to the next rep to read them, increasing your chances of cooperation the second time around. Call in on a landline so you can unlock the phone as they give you instructions.
