Plastic greenhouses are ideal for capturing sunlight and creating a protected growing condition in which tender young plants can thrive. Over time, the plastic can tear or crack. Fortunately, tears and cracks are easy to repair. This simple project, which takes only a few hours, can extend the lifespan of your greenhouse by many years.
Follow the package instructions if you use a kit. Otherwise, cut out a patch of plastic sheeting at least 100mm wider than the tear in each direction.
Clean both sides of the plastic around the tear, both inside the greenhouse and outside. Use soap, water and a rag. Allow to dry.
Apply the patch over the tear on the outside of the greenhouse. Affix it using the kit or apply greenhouse repair tape to completely cover one side of the patch. Peel off the adhesive tape backing and press the patch firmly over the tear, tape side down. Smooth out bubbles.
Apply another patch from the inside of the greenhouse, following the same procedure as for the first patch.
The repair materials for your greenhouse will vary depending on whether it is made of hard plastic sheeting or flexible lightweight plastic. Note which materials you need before you shop for repair items. A greenhouse repair kit includes replacement plastic patches. Instead of a kit, you can purchase plastic sheeting and long-life greenhouse repair tape. Check your greenhouse for tears each year before the summer turns to fall. To reduce the chances of cold air entering your greenhouse and harming your plants, repair any tears while the weather is still warm.
