How Do I Clean a Virus Out of Explorer.exe?
Clean out an explorer.exe virus manually. (computer image by Ewe Degiampietro from

SSCVIHOST.exe is a virus with many names, but essentially they all do the same thing and interfere with a system file called explorer.exe. You cannot just delete the explorer.exe file, but instead you must find the actual virus files within the system files. The virus does not destroy files, but instead adds so many files that the hard drive fills up and your system slows down. You can remove this virus manually through the Task Manager, even if the virus has initially affected the Task Manager and keeps it from opening. However, you must be extremely careful when altering system files manually or you could permanently damage the operating system.

Skill level:

  1. 1

    Press the "Ctrl,""Alt" and "Del" keys simultaneously to open the Task Manager.

  2. 2

    Download a tool to reset the registry keys (see Resources) to a flash drive on another computer, if you cannot open the Task Manager as specified in step 1. Insert the flash drive into the USB port on the infected computer. Open the flash drive and click the tool icon twice to open and install. Follow the on-screen installation instructions. Follow step 1 again after you install the tool.

  3. 3

    Select the "File" tab at the top of the Task Manager window and click on "New Task (run)" from the drop-down list of options. Type "regedit" in the Run box that opens. Expect the Registry Key window to open.

  4. 4

    Locate the following registry key:

    KEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon

    Click twice to expand the option.

  5. 5

    Locate "Shell" = "Explorer.exe SSCVIHOST.exe" under the expanded keys. Place the cursor before the SSCVIHOST.exe section and remove the (SSCVIHOST.exe) word by pressing the delete key.

  6. 6

    Locate the registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun and click twice to expand it.

  7. 7

    Delete the following expanded registry by right-clicking on it and selecting "Delete:"

    "Yahoo Messengger" = "%System%SSCVIHOST.exe"

    Delete the following entry in the same manner:

    "shared" = "[SHARE NAME]New Folder.exe"

  8. 8

    Restore the following registry to its original (0) value if needed:

    "DisableTaskMgr" = "1?

    Change the '1" to "0"

  9. 9

    Follow step 8 and change the value to its original (0) value.

    "DisableRegistryTools = "1?

  10. 10

    Follow step 8 and change the value to its original (0) value.

    "NofolderOptions" = "1?

  11. 11

    Restart the computer. Install a free antivirus software program like Avast or AVG (see Resources.) Open the antivirus program and scan the machine to clean it again. Delete any files you have in your Recycle bin. Restart your computer and use normally.
