The word "Reiki" is made up of two Japanese words: "Rei" which means universal and "Ki" which means life energy. The name of this modality refers to the Japanese founder's belief that a universal source facilitates a body's natural ability to heal itself. To facilitate healing, the practitioner places his hands on the patient at different points on the front and back of the body, using any of 12 to 15 hand positions. The client lies flat on a massage table, fully clothed. To start a Reiki business, begin by taking a training course.

Instructions

  1. 1

Train and receive certification in the various levels of Reiki. The three levels are First degree, Second degree and Reiki Master. First degree Reiki students learn the basic hand movements to heal themselves and others. Second degree Reiki students learn to heal others from a distance and students in the Reiki Master class learn everything they need to know to train others in this healing modality.

  2. 2

Determine the type of Reiki business you want to start. Practitioners who have trained in the first two levels can use Reiki in healing work. Those who have completed the Reiki Master class also can teach Reiki classes.

  3. 3

Make inquiries about license requirements in your state. Many states do not recognise Reiki certifications and will require a license in a health practice. Some Reiki teachers regard their work as spiritual therapy and become ordained ministers. In the states where it is illegal to touch a patient without a health practitioner's license, some Reiki healers obtain a license in massage therapy to adhere to the law.

  4. 4

Obtain a location. Some Reiki practitioners run their business from their homes while others lease commercial property. Ensure that your business set-up complies with the laws of your local government.

  5. 5

Purchase equipment and supplies. At the minimum, a massage table and pillows are required for a Reiki clinic. A Reiki class should have chairs for the students as well as other items to facilitate teaching.

  6. 6

Advertise your business. Some methods of generating community awareness would be to hand out business cards, place an ad in local newspapers, post flyers and offer discounted services for a limited time.

Tips and warnings

  • Plan for the duration of training. Many teachers insist on a mandatory waiting period between each class. The amount of time varies from one teacher to the next and could last from two weeks to a year. Students are expected to use this time to practice and fine-tune the skills they have learnt. It could take years to complete the Reiki Master class.
