The Toyota Prius is equipped with an in-cabin HEPA filter. This filter prevents dust, pollen and contaminants from entering your Prius's interior, keeping the cabin air fresh. For this reason, the filter is often referred to as a cabin air filter (although it's sometimes called a micro filter or a passenger compartment filter). Toyota recommends replacing the filter approximately once every 6 to 12 months, depending on your driving habits and climate. Replacing the filter is fairly easy and shouldn't take longer than 10 to 15 minutes.

  1. 1

Turn the engine off and open the glove box compartment. Remove all the items from the glove box and set them side.

  2. 2

Locate the rubber dampener on the outside right wall (close to the passenger side door) of the glove box. This dampener supports the glove box and prevents it from fully lowering to the floorboard.

  3. 3

Support the glove box with one hand. With the other hand, unhook the dampener to release the glove box. Lower the glove box slowly to the floor (it's still attached by its primary hinge). You may have to slightly squeeze together the sides of the glove box.

  4. 4

Push together the two tabs on the top portion of the white filter compartment. This will release the compartment from the vehicle; pull it out with your hands carefully.

  5. 5

Remove the old cabin air filter from the compartment tray. Discard the filter, but do not discard the tray (you will reuse it).

  6. 6

Insert the new filter into the compartment tray. Push the corners of the filter down to secure it inside the tray. Reinsert the compartment tray into its mount. Push it firmly to lock the tabs.

  7. 7

Push up the glove box compartment (make sure the bottom hinge is still properly attached; if it's not, push it onto the hinge to attach it) and support it with your hand. Reconnect the rubber dampener and close the glove box door.

Tips and warnings

  • The Toyota Prius cabin air filter part number is 87139 - 47010 - 83; however, an aftermarket substitute may be available. Check with an automotive parts store or your Toyota dealer to obtain the proper cabin air filter.
