Glass plates, glasses and vases are gorgeous items. They catch the light, clean easily and go effortlessly with any kind of decor Because they can be very expensive, it is often frustrating when they break, which is especially inconvenient if you only have a set number of glasses that you need for a dinner party. An unexpected chip in a glass can leave you scrambling to find a replacement at the last minute. Fortunately there are ways to repair your chipped glass and make it usable and functional again.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Cellulose cement or epoxy
- 320-grit sandpaper
- 400-grit sandpaper
- 600-grit sandpaper
- Silver polish
- Protective goggles
- 2 clean soft cloths
Glue the chipped piece back on if you can find it. Smooth a thin layer of cellulose cement onto the chipped part of the glass, and press the broken piece firmly into it, holding it together for the amount of time specified on the glue’s bottle or tube. If your glass is one that is exposed to water or other liquids, use a nontoxic epoxy instead of the cellulose cement. If you are unable to find the missing piece of the glass your only option to save the glass is to smooth it.
Put on your protective goggles.
Use 320-grit sandpaper to smooth over the chipped area rapidly, back and forth until you have smoothed down the entire chipped area.
Take your 400-grit sandpaper, and sand the entire area thoroughly, being sure that you are only sanding the chipped area and not the undamaged part of the glass.
Go over the area you just sanded with the 600-grit sandpaper. Move over it quickly for several strokes until you are satisfied that it is smooth and no longer sharp to the touch.
Use a soft cloth to wipe away any grit or residue that remains on the glass after the sanding process.
Apply silver polish to a soft cloth, and rub it over the chipped area, which should help give the edge a nice smooth finish.
