Although the Thunderbird e-mail client cannot be synced with the iPhone through the phone's mail account settings, you can also use Funambol, a third-party open-source application. Once set up, the applications syncs your Thunderbird contacts and e-mail with the iPhone though the service.

Press the "Home" button on your iPhone, and tap the "App Store" icon on the screen.
Tap the "Search" button at the bottom of the screen, and tap the search bar. Type "Funambol" and tap the "Search" button in the lower-right corner.
Tap the Funambol search result and tap the "FREE" button. Tap "INSTALL" and enter your iTunes account password. Tap "OK" to start the download.
Open your Internet browser on your computer and click the URL field. Type "http://my.funambol.com" and press the "Return" key on your keyboard. Click the "Sign Up" link to create an account.
Enter your personal information and click "Submit" button to proceed. Click the link in the Resources section to download the Thunderbird Funambol plug-in, and follow the on-screen instructions to download the plug-in.
Open Thunderbird, and click "Tools" at the top of the screen. Select "Add-ons" from the drop-down menu and click the "Install" button.
Locate the downloaded plug-in and click it once to highlight it. Click the "Open" button to install the plug-in. Open the Funambol Sync Client and click "Sync All" to sync your contacts, calendar and e-mail to the Funambol server.
Tap the "Funambol" icon on your iPhone screen, and enter your user name and password. Click the tab in the upper-left corner of the screen, and click "Sync Contacts."
