Ricoh printers have a reputation for providing quality work at high speed. This means there may be a long wait if you only have one available for your home or office, and not having access to a printer at the right time can result in a loss of efficiency. To combat this, instead of purchasing a printer for each user, you can add the printer to an existing computer network. By connecting your printer to a network, multiple users can enjoy its speed and quality, while saving a great deal of money.
Things you need
Wireless LAN card (for wireless installations)
Plug the printer cable that came with your Ricoh printer into both the printer and a computer that is already part of the desired network. If you prefer a wireless connection, attach a wireless LAN card to your printer.
From the "Start" menu, click the Control Panel option. Select the Printer folder. This may also show as the Printer and Other Hardware folder, depending on which operating system you are using.
Select the task to view installed printers or fax printers, and check for the icon for your Ricoh printer. If no icon is showing, return to the "Printer" folder and select the task to add a printer. Follow the instructions for the "Add Printer" wizard.
Right-click the icon for your Ricoh printer. On the menu that pops up, select "Properties." Go to the "Shared" tab and click on the "Share This Printer" option. If the Shared option is disabled on your computer for security purposes, run the "Network Setup" wizard that will appear in the menu. Click "OK" to close the printer options.
Give each user who is allowed access the location of the printer on the network. Choose at least one of the remote printers to run a test print to confirm that the printer's settings are correct.
- If the printer is physically connected to a computer on the network, that computer must be on to access the printer. All computers on the network must be in the same workgroup to have access to a printer on that network.
- Use security software to protect your network printer from unauthorised use.
