How to Update My Garmin Nuvi Without a USB

Updated April 17, 2017

Your Garmin Nuvi keeps you on the right track with its maps, turn-by-turn directions and points of interest. To keep your GPS device up to date, you need to install the latest software and maps for it. If you lost the USB cable, you may use another way to install the software onto your device. Your Garmin Nuvi has Bluetooth technology, which means it wirelessly synchronises with your computer. Setting up both your computer and Garmin Nuvi is a quick process.

Insert the Bluetooth dongle into your computer's USB port. Click the "Add New Device" message in the lower right corner of your computer screen.

Click "Next" to install the drivers for the dongle. Place a check mark next to "My device is turned on and discoverable." Click the "Next" button.

Press the Bluetooth button on the dongle to turn on Bluetooth.

Press the Bluetooth icon on your Garmin Nuvi. Press the "ON" button if Bluetooth is not already on.

Download the latest version of Nuvi software from the Garmin website. Save the file to your desktop.

Click "Start" and "Computer." Double-click your Garmin Nuvi folder, detected by your Bluetooth dongle.

Drag the Nuvi software into the folder. The software will install onto your Garmin device.
