Things you need
- Beach or bath towel (large enough to wrap around the body)
- Matching thread
- Length of 1"-wide elastic
- Safety pins
- Hook and loop tape
- Sewing machine
Lay the towel on a flat surface and cut off the ribbed edges or trim on either end. These edges will form the straps. Set aside. Fold over the edges of the towel about 1/4 inch and sew with the sewing machine to hem. Fold the ribbed edges you have trimmed off in half and sew with the sewing machine all the way down the length to form a strap.
Fold over the top edge of the towel and sew a two inch seam using your sewing machine. Pin a safety pin to the end of the elastic. Insert a length of elastic shorter than the width of the towel into the seam and pull through. Secure the elastic on both ends of the towel with stitching using your sewing machine. The top edge of the towel now will be slightly gathered or scrunched up.
Wrap the towel around your upper body just under the armpits to determine where to put the hook and loop tape. Mark with a safety pin where the folds meet and overlap. Measure the appropriate length of hook and loop tape for each section of towel. Attach the loop side to the front surface of the towel closest to your body; stitch with your sewing machine. Repeat the process with the hook section of tape and attach to the opposing side of the towel, or the part that will be wrapping and connecting to the opposite side. Sew down the tape with your sewing machine.
Wrap the towel around your body and secure with the hook and loop tape. Determine where you will place the shoulder straps and mark with safety pins on the front and back of the towel. Remove the towel and sew the straps on one at a time, front and back, using your sewing machine.
Tips and warnings
- You may need to hand-turn the needle on the sewing machine during various stages of this project due to the thickness of the towel.
