Honda Accords are equipped with dual cooling fans in the engine bay. The primary fan’s job is to pull air across the radiator; the secondary fan draws air across the air conditioning condenser. In some model years, the two fans come as one assembly in which case they must be replaced together. In the Accords that feature self-contained units, the condenser fan can be changed out in under a half hour by anyone with the right tools and basic mechanical skills.

  1. 1

Raise the bonnet and disconnect the negative battery cable using a battery terminal wrench. Shine a flashlight down onto the condenser fan assembly to locate the wiring harness to the fan motor and the three bolts holding the fan assembly in place.

  2. 2

Disconnect the wiring harness from the fan motor and move it to the side so it doesn’t get caught in the fan assembly during removal or installation.

  3. 3

Remove the bolts from the top and bottom of the fan assembly, located in the shroud, with the socket set. Remove the bolts by hand, once they have been loosened with the socket set, to prevent dropping them into the engine well. Set the three bolts to the side for easy access during installation.

  4. 4

Lift the old fan assembly upward and out of the engine well carefully. Avoid catching it on any wiring or other engine components. Set the assembly off to the side so you can return it later for a refund on your core charge if you paid one with the new fan assembly.

  5. 5

Lower the new fan assembly into position and thread the bolts in as far as you can by hand, to prevent cross-threading them. Once the bolts are threaded, tighten them down with the socket set.

  6. 6

Reconnect the wiring harness and negative battery cable in reverse of removal.

Tips and warnings

  • In some model years, you will need to climb under the Accord and remove the splash guard which covers the bottom of the radiator in order to access the lower fan bolts.
