How to Wear Garter Belts

According to The Clothing, Lingerie and Apparel Dictionary, garter belts were created in the 1920s to hold stockings in place. Back then, pantyhose didn't have an elastic band to hold them up. Today, garter belts are made of elastic and are covered by a variety of fabrics, including silk and lace. They come in a variety of colours and styles, and are considered a piece of lingerie, as they are worn under a woman's garments, mainly for looks.

    Put on underwear and then slip the garter belt around your waist, making sure the straps are not twisted. Some garter belts will need to be fastened closed just like a bra. Make sure the fasteners lie against your back.

    Put on a pair of thigh-high pantyhose. Make sure they are rolled all the way to the top of the thigh or as high as they go.

    Adjust the length of each garter belt strap so it reaches the top edge of the thigh-highs. The straps are similar to a bra straps.

    Unfasten all of the hanging clasps on the garter belt. Put the round part of the clasp on the inside about an inch from the top of the stocking. Lock it into place by placing the looped end over the round part, and then pulling it to lock it into place. Repeat the process until all clasps are locked.

    Readjust the straps' length so they are not pulling. Check the length of the back straps, making sure you can sit down and stand up without the strap coming undone.
