Investing in green technologies such as wind farms is one way to put your concern for the environment into action. Green technologies and sustainable energy are promising, but the companies who make those technologies need capital to create and market their products. There are a number of ways investors can get involved and it's important for those investors to consider their options carefully.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Look for traditional energy companies that are getting involved in wind farms and other sustainable technologies. Investing in established energy companies with a diversified portfolio of energy products is often less risky than investing in a start-up company with no track record.

  2. 2

Subscribe to financial newspapers such as "The Wall Street Journal" and "Investor's Business Daily" or read them online. These newspapers often contain articles about the alternative energy sector, along with information about the major players. Financial newspapers can be excellent sources of investment ideas, but it is still important to research each company before investing. Financial websites like, Yahoo! Finance and CNN Money are also good sources of information.

  3. 3

Invest in a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund that is devoted to the wind power industry.

  4. 4

Add up any money you have invested in the stock market, then determine how much you want to invest in the wind power and alternative energy sectors. Financial experts such as John Bogle--founder of the Vanguard funds--recommend diversifying your stock market holdings, so only a small percentage should be devoted to this volatile sector. The prices of alternative energy and wind power stocks can change dramatically in a matter of hours, so investors will need to live with this volatility.

  5. 5

Contact your brokerage firm or mutual fund company to get the forms you need to open your investment account. Provide complete information on registration forms, including your full name, address, phone and Social Security numbers. Enclose your payment with the completed forms and return all the materials to the address listed on the registration form.
