How to Add a Custom Screensaver in XP

The Windows XP operating system comes with a handful of pre-installed screensaver files. You can also use the screen saver utility in Windows XP to create a slide show screen saver that can be utilised in XP. However, if you want to use a custom screensaver file that a friend has created or one that you have downloaded from a website, you will need to add the screensaver file to the proper system folder in Windows XP.

Instructions

    Right-click on the screensaver file. This file will have an extension of “.scr.”

    Click “Start” in the taskbar.

    Open “My Computer.”

  4. 4

    Double-click the “Local Disk (C)” icon.

  5. 5

    Open the “WINDOWS” folder.

  6. 6

    Scroll through the listed folders and open “System32.”

    Right-click on an open area of the “System32” folder and select “Paste.” The custom screensaver will be added to XP.

    Click “Start” in the taskbar and open “Control Panel.”

    Select the “Switch to Classic View” link on the left side of the open window if the Control Panel is in the Category View. Otherwise, you can skip to step 3.

    Open the “Display” option and a window will open.

    Choose “Screen Saver” at the top of the open window. All of the saved screen savers, including the custom one from Section 1, will be located in the drop box at the bottom of the window.

    Click the drop box and highlight the custom screensaver. Then, click “Apply” and “OK” to enable the custom screensaver.
