How to Clean a Print Head on HP DeskJet 450

Updated February 21, 2017

If you do not use your HP DeskJet 450 often, the print cartridges may become dry and clogged. The print heads clog when the ink dries, which stops the flow of ink from printing onto a page. This can be frustrating, but luckily HP has cleaning options built into its printers. You can clean the print heads manually by pressing a few buttons on the printer, or clean them by accessing the printer’s drivers on the computer. Once print heads are cleaned and clear of any clogs, your printer’s performance will be back to normal.

Turn on the HP DeskJet 450.

Click on “Start,” then “Control Panel.” Locate the “Printers” icon and double-click. Double-click on the HP DeskJet 450 Icon. This brings up the properties of the printer.

Click on the “Services” tab, locate the “Clean Print Cartridge” option and when prompted click “OK.” This automatically starts the print head cleaning function.

Turn on the HP DeskJet 450.

Press the “Power” button on the printer and hold down. Continue to hold down the “Power” button while pressing the “Cancel” button two times.

Release the “Power” button. This triggers the printer to begin the print head cleaning process. Do not turn off the printer or attempt to print any documents until cleaning is complete.
