Round tank designs allow engineers to maximise container volume while minimising surface area, which helps reduce the amount of raw material that goes into each unit. From oil drums to fermentation chambers, round tanks are a common fixture in many important industries. In terms of geometry, a round tank is basically a cylinder; to calculate its volume, simply multiply the area of the circular base by the length of the entire container.

  1. 1

Use the measuring tape to measure the distance around the edge of one of the tank's flat, circular ends (in inches). This is the circumference of the base.

  2. 2

Measure the shortest distance from the edge of one end of the tank to the other (in inches). This is the length of the tank.

  3. 3

Multiply the thickness of the tank's wall by two and subtract it from the length (from Step 2). This value represents the length of the space inside the tank.

  4. 4

Divide the circumference (from Step 1) by 3.14 to calculate the diameter of the base.

  5. 5

Divide the diameter by two to calculate the outer radius of the tank.

  6. 6

Subtract the thickness of the tank's wall from the outer radius. The result is the radius of the space inside the tank.

  7. 7

    Square this adjusted radius.

  8. 8

    Multiply by 3.14.

  9. 9

Multiply the product from Step 8 by the internal length of the tank (from Step 3). The resulting value is the internal volume of the tank, i.e. the maximum volume of fluid the tank can hold. The units are cubic inches.

  10. 10

Divide this volume by 61 to convert its units to litres.
