Garmin's MapSource is map software that allows global positioning system (GPS) users to create, edit, export, and import GPS data. GPS data contained in MapSource includes, but is not limited to, waypoints, points of interest, routes, and tracks. Maps in Garmin devices are formatted in the .IMG file format. One of the easiest ways to convert Garmin maps to MapSource is by using MapSetToolkit and cgpsmapper. These applications can be downloaded and installed free of charge.

  1. 1

Create a "Garmin" folder in your C drive. Go to "Start," select "Computer," double-click on Drive C, open "Program Files," and then create a folder by right-clicking on within the "Program Files" directory, selecting "New," and then "Folder."

  2. 2

Download cGPSmapper and MapSetToolkit to your computer. To download cGPSmapper, select the "Download Free cGPSmapper version 0100 for Windows" link on the home page (see resources). To download MapSetToolkit, select the link next to "Link 1" or "Link 2" on the application home page.

  3. 3

Install cGPSmapper and MapSetToolkit by double-clicking on each file, and then following the prompts.

  4. 4

Rename the .IMG file you would like to convert to MapSource by assigning it a numerical name. MapSetToolkit does not recognise .IMG files that are not numbers.

  5. 5

Open MapSetToolkit, click on "Select IMG File", and then choose the .IMG file by highlighting the file and then selecting "Add." You will have the option of adding several .IMG files. Select the directory containing the .IMG file under "Mapset directory."

  6. 6

Enter a name for the new mapset you uploaded to MapSetToolkit, which could be the name of a location, such as "London." Enter any four-digit code, such as "1234," in the "Product Code" field.

  7. 7

Scroll to the lower left of the window, and then select the directory where you downloaded "cgpsmapper.exe" and select it. The "cgpsmapper.exe" file is typically located in "C:\Program Files\cGPSmapper" directory. Leave the "Convert (Product>Families)" section blank, and then select the "Install in MapSource" checkbox.

  8. 8

Check the "Blank overview maps" option if you would like to disable map preview in MapSource. If cgpsmapper crashes after selecting this option, leave this option unchecked.

  9. 9

Click the "Start" button to convert your .IMG file to MapSource, and then receive a confirmation within the dialogue box that the file conversion was successful. The new map is located under the "Uninstall Mapset" section.

  10. 10

Open MapSource. The newly added map should be located at the top left-hand corner with the name of the mapset. For example, if you named your mapset "London" you will find a "London" drop-down menu at the top left-hand corner. You have successfully converted a Garmin map to MapSource.
