Area rugs add texture and colour to your space and are often used to anchor a room. One some floors, such as hardwood and tile, these rugs can slip and become a dangerous tripping hazard. With some double-sided tape or rug gripper, you can safely make sure that your area rug stays in its place and doesn't become a hazard in your home.
Unroll your rug. Lay it out flat and place heavy bricks on the four corners and sides of the rug to encourage it to be as flat as possible. Leave the bricks on the rug for 24 hours.
Measure the length and width of your rug and subtract 1 inch from each measurement. If you are using your rug on a hard floor surface, cut a piece of rug grip material, available at most home supply centres, the same length and width as your measurements. Rug grip is made of a highly textured rubber that resists moving even on slick floors. Its rubbery texture holds the rug in place while staying firmly in place on the floor, and it also protects your floor from the scratchy back of the rug. Rug grip does not work well on carpeted floors.
Place the rug grip on the floor where you want your area rug to lie. Place the area rug over the rug grip so that it covers it completely. Adjust both the rug grip and the carpet if necessary until they are where you want them. Test the adherence of the rug and rug grip to the floor by walking over them several times. If they move or if you are on a carpeted area, you may want to apply double-sided tape to them to secure them even more firmly to the floor.
Cut pieces of double-sided tape the same width and height as your rug. Lay the rug grip flat and apply the tape to all four edges. Turn the rug grip over and carefully place on the floor where you want your area rug. Use your hands to press the tape into place and to keep the rug grip perfectly flat.
Apply tape to the top of the piece of rug grip on all four sides and down the middle. Place the rug on top of the rug grip and adjust it so it is straight. Walk over the rug several times to lock the tape in place.
