Hippie skirts are not only great for costumes. They are an excellent solution for hot summer days since they are light and flowing. It isn't too hard to find a hippie skirt in stores, but it can be hard to find the right size, colours, and price to suit your needs. Fortunately, hippie skirts are incredibly easy to sew as long as you have basic sewing skills and a few common sewing supplies. When making your own hippie skirt, you can have the freedom to add any embellishments that you like. Plus, it will be sure to fit well and look great.

  1. 1

Cut a piece of fabric that is 6 inches wider than the circumference of your waist and long enough to reach from your waist to your ankles.

  2. 2

Fold the fabric in half, right sides together, bringing the shorter edges together. Sew the short edges together, forming a sort of tube of fabric.

  3. 3

Hem one of the remaining raw edges of the fabric to form the bottom of the skirt. Hem the other raw edge to form the waistline, leaving the hem open about 1 inch.

  4. 4

Cut a piece of elastic that is just long enough to wrap around your waist. Thread this elastic through the waistband, using the 1-inch opening. Gather the fabric as needed.

  5. 5

Sew the two ends of the elastic together and sew the 1-inch opening closed.

  6. 6

Soak the entire skirt with water and wring it out. Scrunch the skirt into a ball, and secure it in that shape with rubber bands.

  7. 7

Allow the skirt to dry, and release it from the rubber bands and the ball shape. This will create a wrinkled look in the skirt. If it is too wrinkly, simply hang it on a skirt hanger, smooth it out with your hands, and allow it to hang for a little while.
