  1. 1

Repair a Bissell steam cleaner that has stopped spraying. If the spray function has quit working on the carpet cleaner, check to make sure there is a full tank of water. If the water level is adequate, check the position of the gasket on the bottom of the water tank assembly. The gasket can become lodged, damaged, or removed. If this has happened, fix the gasket to the proper position according to the user manual, or replace the damaged or missing gasket.

  2. 2

Change the belt on a Bissell steam cleaner that has inoperable brushes. From time to time, belts on carpet steam cleaners become worn, and you must replace them. If the brushes on your unit have stop moving or do not turn on, you may have a damaged belt.

Replace a belt at home easily with little expense. Refer to your user's manual for replacement instructions and the part number for purchasing the belt. Remove and replace the belt according to the model of Bissell steam cleaner you own. Purchase a new belt at home improvement stores or directly from Bissell.

  3. 3

Repair a Bissell steam cleaner that has no suction. If your carpet cleaning machine is not suctioning properly, check the motor duct gasket first, according to Bissell. To check this, first remove the water tank and place your hand over the rubber square opening. If you notice suction at the duct, remove the tank from the machine to ensure that it is properly attached. If so, make sure the water tank is not full on the outside of the bladder. Check that the hose is attached correctly to the back of the machine. If not, reinsert as necessary. Check the lint screen on the water tank for trapped debris. Remove dirt or debris if needed. If there is no suction at that location, contact Bissell to find a repair facility for your unit.

  4. 4

Repair a floor brush that is stuck or has trouble rotating. Hair, string, dirt or debris can become lodged in the brushes and make it difficult for them to rotate and move properly. If this has become a problem, unplug the machine, remove the water from the tank and turn the unit upside down so the brushes are exposed. Remove any dirt or debris from the brushes and begin the cleaning process.

  5. 5

Repair a leaking tank. Empty the tank and ensure that the bladder is positioned correctly. Check the unit for a leaking valve. If the valve is damaged, you must replace the tank.
