Angel costumes can be a bit intimidating because you have to make the wings to go along with it. Without them, it wouldn’t be an angel costume. With a few simple materials you have around the house and a quick trip to a party store, you will have everything you need to make angel wings for your child’s costume.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- 2 wire coat hangers
- Needle-nose pliers
- 4 feet elastic waistband material
- Duct tape
- 6 rolls of white crepe paper
Shape two coat hangers into outlines of two angel wings. Find a picture on the Internet to use as a model. Use needle-nose pliers to twist the two ends together so there will be no wire sticking out.
Make two rings out of the rubber banding that is sold in sewing shops and used for elastic waistbands in clothes. The rings should be big enough to fit around your child’s shoulder. They will be used to hold the wings on, much like the straps of a back pack.
Attach the two wire wings together with one piece of duct tape. Then place the two elastic bands over the piece of duct tape. Wrap more duct tape around the area, securing the wings and elastic bands together with the duct tape.
Wrap the wings in white crepe paper, covering one wing entirely, then crossing over to the other. Pull the paper snuggly as you do this. You should finish up at the duct tape connection and continue to cover the area until no tape is showing.
Measure enough white crepe paper to go around the outline of the wings two times. Cut that amount and, using scissors, fringe one side of the total length of the crepe paper. Make sure to do this in tiny cuts, about 1/8-inch long. You can fold the crepe paper so you can cut four layers at once to make it go quicker. Leave the other side of the crepe paper straight.
Put regular white liquid paper glue along the outside of one side of the wings. Starting at the bottom of one wing, slowly press the fringed crepe paper around the outside of the wings with the fringes hanging over the edge. Let the paper dry, then flip it over and do the other side the same way.
Tips and warnings
- You can use spray glue and add some silver glitter to the wings to help them stand out.
- Pull the crepe paper snugly, but not too tight. If it is too tight it can easily rip.
