Pita bread is a flat bread often used in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. Whole pita breads can be served on the side of a meal, while pita pockets typically hold ingredients similar to a wrap. Fresh pita bread is soft, yet crusty; however, it can quickly harden if it is not stored correctly. Properly wrapping pita bread and storing it at the right temperature will help lengthen its freshness period, so the bread retains its softness.
Remove the pita bread from its original packaging. Discard the packaging--it may not be secure enough to completely keep out any air, especially after you open and close it repeatedly.
Wrap each individual pita bread tightly in cling film, making sure no air is trapped between the plastic and the bread. Transfer the individually wrapped pita breads into a gallon-sized freezer bag.
Place the bag of wrapped pita breads into your refrigerator. Store them in there for a maximum of three days.
Unwrap a pita bread when you're ready to eat it and place it onto a baking tray. Bake it at 149 degrees Celsius for five minutes or until the bread is softened.
For a healthier alternative to crisps, slice pita bread into small triangles and bake them at 177 degrees Cor about 10 minutes or until they are crispy. If you know you won't be able to eat the pita bread within three days, transfer individual pitas into small freezer bags and store in the freezer for up to three months--when you're ready to eat, take a pita out and microwave it for 10 to 15 seconds.
Never store pita bread on your countertop or anywhere else at room temperature or it will start to go bad more quickly.
